Does this work without knowing the password?

For owner-restriction-only PDFs (printing/editing restricted but not locked to open), it may work without a password. For PDFs that require a password to open, you must supply the correct password.

Is this tool legal to use?

Only use this on PDFs you own or have explicit permission to unlock. Bypassing protection on documents you don't have rights to is illegal.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The unlock process runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF and password are never transmitted anywhere.

Can I unlock any PDF?

This tool works with standard PDF encryption. DRM-protected PDFs from e-book stores typically cannot be unlocked with this approach.
