FAQ

Common questions

Does this calculate provincial rates?

It can model any combined rate you enter, which is useful for GST/HST planning at a practical level.

Is this a filing tool?

No. It is a planning calculator, not a tax filing replacement.

Can I use it for invoices?

Yes. It is useful for estimating the tax portion before creating an invoice.

Does it work in reverse?

Yes. You can extract the tax base from a tax-inclusive price as well.

Is anything stored?

No. The calculation stays local in the browser.

Select the Canadian tax based on place of supply

GST or HST depends on the applicable place-of-supply rules, not simply the seller's address. Provinces using HST have one combined rate, while GST provinces may also impose a separate PST or QST administered under different registration, invoice, and recovery rules.

To extract tax from a tax-inclusive total, divide using the applicable fraction rather than subtracting the headline percentage. A $113 total at 13% HST contains $13 tax and a $100 base; subtracting 13% of $113 would produce the wrong result.

Confirm whether the supply is taxable, zero-rated, exempt, or outside scope. Input tax credits generally relate to GST/HST paid on eligible business purchases, while some provincial sales taxes are not recovered the same way. Keep supporting invoices for the actual reporting process.

Registration thresholds, digital supplies, imports, interprovincial services, and Quebec administration require current CRA or Revenu Québec guidance. The calculator performs rate arithmetic for the province selected; it does not decide registration or prepare a return.
